It’s Time To Clear The Shelters

August 1 2023

August is Clear The Shelters Month! This is a wonderful cause, and one we are happy to support. Clear the Shelters is a nationwide event, with thousands of shelters taking part across the U.S. The basic gist, as you can probably guess, is to help shelter animals get adopted, with the ultimate dream goal being empty shelters. In this article, a local Carolina Forest, SC veterinarian offers some information on the event and how you can support it.

Basics

This year marks the ninth annual Clear The Shelters celebration. So far, over 860,000 dogs and cats have found homes through the drive. The event gets a little bigger every year, with help from major media companies, such as NBC and Telemundo. In fact, last year the event facilitated over 161,000 adoptions and raised $540,000! You can learn more at the official Clear The Shelters website here.

Adopting

If you’re looking to adopt, this is  a great time to do so, as many places offer reduced or even waived adoption fees. Those that are interested in adopting a pet have several options. You can find participating local shelters though the website’s online map or by downloading the WeRescue App. Just type your zip code in and see what pets are available for adoption near you. You can even do virtual adoptions. This is a great way to screen potential pets and find out a bit more about them.

Other Ways To Help

Adoption is a lifetime commitment, so it’s something to think long and hard about. If you’re not quite ready to take that step, you can help in other ways. Simply sharing posts on social media can be quite effective. Keep an eye on the adoption tracker, and see how many pets find their furever homes. Sharing those updates can help get people onboard. Remember to use the hashtags #cleartheshelters and #DesocuparLosAlbergues. Who knows? You may change a cute pet’s life with a few quick keystrokes!

Donations are another great way to help. Greater Good Charities is the organization that is coordinating donations. If you want to donate supplies, you can also just find a participating shelter and check their website for wish lists. Or, just give them a call.
