Summer Cat Care

July 1 2023

Summers here in South Carolina can be scorching hot. While many people love the heat, it can be very uncomfortable and dangerous for our feline companions. You’ll want to take a few precautions to keep your kitty comfy and safe as temperatures rise. A Conway, SC vet offers some advice on how to do that in this article.

Water

The most important thing you can do to help Fluffy weather the weather is make sure she always has fresh, clean water. You may need to set out extra water bowls, purrticularly if you have more than one pet and/or live in a large or multi-storied home. Many cats prefer running water, so a kitty fountain may be a good bet.

Grooming

Fluffy is pretty good about keeping up with her beauty care, but she can use a bit of assistance. Brushing her will capture dead fur and dander before she swallows it. This will not only help her stay comfy, it will also help reduce or prevent hairballs.

Parasite Prevention

Although we don’t get as much of a break from things like fleas, ticks, and mosquitos in winter as our northern friends do, this is still a prime time for parasites. Keep up with Fluffy’s preventative care! It’s both cheaper and easier to prevent infestations and infections than it is to treat them. Ask your vet for more information.

Cool Beds

Kitties don’t usually have too much trouble finding themselves comfy spots, but you can spoil your furry pal a bit by offering a few cool beds. Keep a few clean towels in the freezer, and put those on Fluffy’s bed on sweltering days.

Keep Kitty Contained

Cats are brave and adventurous, but they’re also small, fragile, and prone to getting into mischief. The best way to keep Fluffy safe is to keep her indoors, in rooms with fans or climate control. You can still let her enjoy some fresh air and exercise by making her a catio or cat enclosure.

Cool Treats

You should never share your ice cream with your fuzzy friend: these products contain too much fat and sugar for kitties, and also often contain ingredients that are toxic to them. However, you can buy or make Fluffy her own version.
