Happy New Year! Are you starting out 2019 with a dog at your side? If so, Fido will help you ring in the New Year, and will fill the next 12 months with tail wags and puppy kisses. Why not include your canine buddy in your resolutions? A Carolina Forest, SC vet offers tips on keeping your dog happy and healthy this year.
Toys/Activity
It doesn’t take a genius to see that playing is really fun for dogs. Fido often jumps for joy when you pick up a Frisbee or rope toy, and he’s absolutely adorable when he is happily bounding after his favorite toy. Playing also benefits your pooch mentally and physically. Keep your pup’s toybox full, and take time to walk and play with him daily.
Veterinary Care
Ok, Fido probably won’t jump for joy when he realizes he is going to the vet. However, he will look and feel better if he’s healthy! Schedule an appointment today.
Grooming
Fido may not be a big fan of getting bathed, but he does seem to enjoy feeling clean and soft… and he definitely likes those post-bath snuggles. Regular baths will keep your furry buddy looking, feeling, and smelling good!
Safety
Dogs are both playful and curious. However, while Fido is very smart in some ways, he doesn’t necessarily know what is and isn’t safe. Never let your pooch run around off-leash, except of course in fenced yards. Some puppyproofing is also in order. Remove or secure potentially-dangerous items, such as chemicals, medications, toxic plants, plastic bags, and anything small or sharp.
Training
All dogs should know basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. If Fido doesn’t have these down pat yet, complete his ‘petucation’ in 2019.
Belly Rubs
Does your canine pal close his eyes in sheer bliss when you scratch that itchy spot on his back? Does he smile and wiggle with joy when you rub his belly? These are some of Fido’s cutest habits!
Treats
While you don’t want to go overboard with treats, there’s no reason Fido can’t enjoy some yummy snacks. In fact, treats are a great way to reward your furry friend for being good!
