Holiday Care for Senior Pets

December 1 2018

Season’s Greetings! It’s always wonderful to spend time with our friends and family members at this special time of year. Of course, pets are an important part of the family, too. However, if your dog or cat is a senior, you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furry pal happy, healthy, and safe during the holidays. In this article, a Carolina Forest, SC vet discusses holiday care for senior pets.

Presents

Toys are the most popular gifts for younger pets, but dogs and cats in their senior years are often more interested in napping than in playing. A comfy bed would make a perfect gift for Fido or Fluffy! Heated beds, thermal blankets, and pet ramps or stairs are also good options. Raised dishes make terrific presents for older dogs, while Fluffy may like a litterbox with low sides.

Guests

While Fluffy and Fido may enjoy getting some extra attention and ear scritches from guests, a lot of commotion may be too much for them. If you’re hosting a party or a big dinner, consider setting your furry friend up in a quiet back room with comfy bedding, food, and, in Fluffy’s case, a litterbox. That way, your pet can rest peacefully while you celebrate.

Food

That delicious food is an important part of many seasonal festivities. While it’s fine to give your pet something special, you don’t want to go overboard. Rich or fatty foods can upset your fuzzy pal’s tummy. Just give Fido or Fluffy some cooked, plain meat, fish, or chicken. Remove the skin, bones, or fat first.

Weather

Damp, chilly weather can be tough on pets with bone/joint problems, such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. Consider treating your furry buddy to a soothing pet massage. Supplements may also be helpful. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming

There are actually quite a few reasons to brush your pet regularly. For one thing, it will remove dead fur and dander from their coat. This will help them stay warmer, and help keep them from feeling itchy. Your furry best friend will also look soft and clean for guests and photos. Last but not least, you’ll be capturing that fur with a brush before it gets stuck to everything. Please contact us, your Carolina Forest, SC vet clinic, for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs.
