Did you know that September is officially Responsible Dog Ownership Month? This is a great time to take a look at your pup’s care regimen, and perhaps see if there are any areas that could use improvement. Below, a Myrtle Beach, SC veterinarian discusses some key points of responsible dog ownership.
Veterinary Care
Proper veterinary care is crucial to your canine pal’s health and well-being. As a puppy, Fido will need his initial exams and vaccinations, as well as microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. Once your pooch is grown, he may only need to come in once or twice a year for checkups, vaccinations, and dental care. In between visits, keep up with your pup’s parasite control, and watch for any signs of sickness. Ask your vet for more recommendations.
Diet
While your canine buddy may not be very picky about what he eats, proper nourishment is critical to his health. Get your pup the best food you can afford. Don’t go overboard on fatty treats, though: overeating is very bad for Fido’s health.
Training
Training Fido isn’t just about teaching him good doggy manners: it’s also crucial for safety purposes. Make sure your pooch knows basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.
Comfort
There are lots of small things you can do that will help keep your pet comfortable. Provide your pooch with a good doggy bed is very important, especially for senior pets and large breeds. If Fido spends a lot of time in the yard, make sure he has shelter, shade, and plenty of water. Keeping your pet well-groomed will help keep him comfortable. Regular nail trims are also important: overgrown claws are very uncomfortable for dogs! Your vet may offer additional recommendations based on your dog’s age and health: don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions!
Toys/Entertainment
Man’s Best Friend is very playful and intelligent. Keep your pooch happy and entertained by offering him lots of fun doggy toys, and taking time to play with him every day.
Tail Wags
Dogs need to feel loved in order to really be happy. Fido’s ability to love unconditionally is a beautiful thing, and certainly something to cherish. Spend time with your pooch every day: pet him, play with him, and take him for walks. Does your pooch need veterinary care? Contact us, your local Myrtle Beach, SC animal hospital, anytime!
