Pet owners in Conway, Carolina Forest, and the surrounding South Carolina communities often have similar questions about preventive care and what to expect at our hospital. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear. If you need clarification or want to talk through your pet’s specific needs, please contact Waccamaw Regional Veterinary Center — we’re always happy to help.
At what age do puppies and kittens start vaccines?
Puppies and kittens typically begin vaccines at 8 weeks of age. After that, they receive booster vaccines every 3–4 weeks until they are old enough to complete the series. The rabies vaccine is usually given at 16 weeks of age. Starting vaccines on schedule is one of the best ways to protect young pets as their immune systems develop.
Why is heartworm prevention so important?
Heartworm prevention is important because it protects your pet against heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworm infections can become serious and even life-threatening if left untreated. Year-round prevention is the safest and most effective way to keep your dog or cat protected.
My dog or cat does not go outside. Why do they need prevention?
Even indoor pets need heartworm and flea prevention. Mosquitoes can enter your home through open doors and windows, and fleas can be tracked inside on clothing, furniture, or by other pets. Parasites can survive in unexpected places, including indoor environments, and they can transmit disease. For that reason, year-round parasite prevention is recommended for all pets, whether they are indoors or outdoors.
What form of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and CareCredit. We do not accept checks. If you have any questions about payment options before your appointment, our front desk team will be glad to help.
What age do dogs and cats go into heat?
Depending on the breed, most dogs and cats go into heat between 6–18 months of age. If you have questions about spaying or the best timing for your pet, our veterinary team can walk you through your options during a wellness visit.
How much food do I feed my dog or cat?
We recommend following the feeding directions on the food bag or can unless your veterinarian has given you different guidance. Every pet’s needs can vary based on age, activity level, medical conditions, and lifestyle. If you’re unsure about portions or weight management, we’re happy to help you find the right plan.
What does a dental cleaning include?
Our dental cleanings include cleaning under the gumline, anesthesia, full mouth dental x-rays, and pain medication. If extractions are needed, we will provide an estimate after the X-rays are completed, so you understand the next steps before we proceed.
