Microchipping

A microchip is one of the easiest, most reliable ways to help a lost pet find their way home. At Waccamaw Regional Veterinary Center, we offer pet microchipping for dogs and cats as a simple, lasting form of identification.

Collars and tags are important, but they can fall off. A microchip provides a permanent ID that stays with your pet for life.

What Is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny device—about the size of a grain of rice—that is placed just under your pet’s skin, typically between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique ID number that can be scanned by veterinary hospitals and animal shelters.

The microchip does not track your pet’s location like a GPS. Instead, it links your pet to your contact information through a registration database.

Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

Microchipping can dramatically increase the chances of a lost pet being returned safely. It’s especially helpful for:

  • ZPets who slip out the door unexpectedly
  • ZCats who sneak outside
  • ZDogs who spook easily during storms or fireworks
  • ZPets who travel with family or visit parks frequently

When Should My Pet Be Microchipped?

Microchipping can be done at many stages of life. It’s often performed:

  • ZDuring a puppy or kitten visit
  • ZAt a wellness exam
  • ZAt the time of spay/neuter surgery (when your pet is already under anaesthesia)
If you’re adopting a new pet, we can also help confirm whether they already have a microchip and whether it’s properly registered.

Don’t Forget Registration

A microchip only works if the contact information is accurate. Our team can help you understand the registration process and the importance of keeping your phone number and address up to date.
