Kitties certainly are full of adorable quirks. Actually, our feline buddies can be, well, rather perplexing. Fluffy can be purring and cuddly one day, and-for no reason you can see-completely aloof the next. Is your cat really happy? How can you tell? A Carolina Forest, SC vet lists some signs of kitty contentment in this article.
Purring
Usually, when Fluffy starts her engine, it’s a good sign that she is content. Although kitties do also purr when they are sick or scared, if your furball often purrs when you pet her or let her curl up on your lap, it’s probably safe to say she’s happy. Some cats purr as soon as their owners look at them or pet them!
Talking
While some cats are more talkative than others are, uneasy cats don’t often ‘chat’ with their humans. If Fluffy responds when you talk to her, or meows to greet you at the door, your feline overlord is probably not unhappy.
Kneading
Settling down with Fluffy curled up in your lap can be very relaxing … at least, until she starts kneading. Those little claws hurt! Take this slightly painful sign of affection as a compliment, however. Kittens knead their mothers to stimulate milk flow. (Tip: put a towel or blanket on your lap before your furball settles in.)
Facial Expression
Happy cats often have a relaxed, almost smug look on their furry faces. It may interest you to know that blinking slowly is a sign of kitty affection and contentment. If you notice Fluffy doing this to you, try doing it back!
Relaxed Furball
Is Fluffy is clearly relaxed and comfortable in your presence? That’s definitely a good sign. Even if your feline friend doesn’t really like to cuddle, she’ll still hang out with you!
Cattitude
Happy cats can be quite sassy and mischievous at times. For instance, Fluffy may bat at your shoelace, or ‘talk back’ when you call her.
Stalking
Happy kitties like to keep a close eye on their humans. If Fluffy likes to follow you around, rub against your legs, and/or head-butt you, your furball is likely quite pleased with her situation. Some cats even follow their owners into the bathroom! Please contact us, your Carolina Forest, SC vet clinic, for all of your kitty’s veterinary care needs.
