January 24th is National Peanut Butter Day! It’s probably safe to say that your canine companion would be more than happy to help you observe this ‘pawspicious’ occasion. Fido loves PB almost as much as we do! A Carolina Forest, SC vet discusses celebrating this special day with your pooch below.
No-Bake Treats
For these, you’ll use a cup of pureed pumpkin, a quarter cup of PB, a quarter cup of milk, and 3 cups of old-fashioned oats. Mix the wet ingredients together, and then add half the oats and roll the mix into balls. You’ll then roll the balls in the oats. No baking required! Put them in the fridge for about an hour.
Ice Cream
Combine peanut butter with ripe banana. You can add water and/or a little fat-free yogurt to get the consistency right. Use a blender or food processor to smooth the texture out. Divide into small portions before freezing. An ice-cube tray would work, but you can also use freezable dog-treat molds.
Snacks
Mix peanut butter with pureed pumpkin, an egg, and whole-wheat flour. Mix into a batter, then roll into balls. Cook at 350 for 15 minutes, then add time as needed.
Tricks
Have Fido work for his snack! Getting a new command or trick down is great for both your canine buddy’s behavior and his self-esteem.
Squirrel Chasing
If there’s one animal that appreciates peanut butter more than Fido, it’s probably the squirrel. While this shared love probably won’t help these two become friends, it is a good reason to head to a park or trail, and let your pup be taunted by unfamiliar squirrels.

The beautiful thing about Peanut Butter Appreciation Day? It’s a perfect thing to celebrate with your furry best friend! Buy or make Fido some peanut butter treats. Or, stuff a hollow bone or Kong toy with some peanut butter for him. If you’re looking for a good movie, The Peanut Butter Falcon is a good option.
Tips
When discussing dogs and peanut butter, the biggest concern is xylitol. This is a sugar substitute often found in things like gum, mints, and baked goods. It’s safe for us, but is toxic for dogs, as they can’t metabolize it properly. Always check the label!
