Reasons to Play With Your Cat

March 15 2021

Does your feline pal love knocking things off tables, or batting at dangling cords? One of the reasons kitties make such fun pets is the fact that they are so playful. Fluffy is adorable when she’s running around, just acting silly. As it turns out, taking time to dangle that feather toy for your frisky furball is one of the best things you can do for her. Read on as a Carolina Forest, SC vet offers some reasons to play with your cat regularly.

Exercise

You may have noticed that our feline overlords are, well, rather lazy. Playing is typically Fluffy’s standard workout. In fact, it’s often her only workout. Cats can burn huge amounts of energy in a small time when running and pouncing. Even a short daily session will help your cute pet stay fit and healthy.

Confidence

Do you have a scaredy-cat? Playing may help Fluffy gain confidence. Nailing those pounces is sort of like a kitty version of hitting a home run.

Bonding

Kitties do form very strong bonds with their humans. However, you do have to nurture that friendship. Playing is a great way to do that. Fluffy will definitely notice and appreciate your attempts to please her.

Burn Off Friskies

Kitties tend to do things on their own terms. Fluffy may sleep all afternoon, and then decide to play hockey with her favorite bouncy ball in the middle of the night. However, if you tire your furry friend out with a fun play session, she’ll probably be more interested in sleeping beside you than in batting at your toes.

Mental Stimulation

Cats have to really focus to land those jumps and pounces. That concentration is actually very good for your kitty’s mind. This becomes particularly beneficial as your furry pal ages, as it may help prevent the cognitive decline that can affect senior pets.

Peace

Do you have more than one cat? Dual play sessions can also help your kitties bond. Our feline buddies can and do learn to get along, but this probably won’t happen overnight. It can take quite a bit of time for Fluffy and Mittens to learn to accept each other. Just take care not to play favorites!
