Disaster Preparedness for Dog and Cat Owners

April 15 2019

It’s easy to think that a disaster situation will never affect you and your family. The truth is, though, that you just never know when an event may force you away from home! If you own a pet, being prepared ahead of time is your best bet. Here, your Carolina Forest, SC vet offers a few tips on disaster preparedness for pet owners.

Proper Identification

We certainly hope that something like a wildfire, flood, tornado, hurricane, geological event, disease epidemic, chemical accident or toxic spill, or some other disaster event doesn’t force you and your pet away from home. If it does occur, though, it’s important to make sure that your pet is already identified. It’s easy for pets to run away or get lost during the chaotic moments while you’re evacuating, and proper identification is the best safety precaution. Outfit your pet with a microchip, ID tags on the collar, or both at the same time.

Pet Emergency Kit

Another great idea for remaining prepared is to have an on-the-go pet emergency kit packed in your car or garage. Make sure first-aid supplies are included, like gauze, bandages, styptic powder, a pet thermometer, medical tape, a pet-safe disinfectant, scissors, tweezers, and soft towels. You can also purchase a pre-prepared first-aid kit at various pet stores and retail outlets. It’s also best to pack pet essentials like a leash and collar, water bottles and canned food (don’t forget a can opener!), food and water dishes, a pet bed, and a few soft blankets. This way, if you have to evacuate in a hurry, you’ll have everything you need for your pet’s comfort and safety on-hand and ready to go in an instant.

Planning Ahead

The greatest preparatory measure for staying safe with your pet in an emergency situation is a simple one: plan ahead. Do a bit of research online to find out about animal shelters, vet clinics, and pet-friendly hotels along your route out of town. Check with family and friends who live in other areas to see if they would be willing to take you and your animal companion in during your time away from home.
