Dog Biscuits 101

February 15 2019

Does your canine buddy get excited every time you go near the shelf or cupboard where his treats are stored? If so, you may want to prepare for some extra happy dances. February 23 is National Dog Biscuit Day! Read on as a local Carolina Forest, SC vet talks about Fido’s favorite snack.

Biscuit Benefits

We probably don’t have to tell you that dogs love treats. Fido is super adorable when he’s hoping for a snack! Dog biscuits can actually be quite beneficial for your canine companion. They are a wonderful way for you to reward him for good behavior. They also help your four-legged buddy feel loved and safe, which will in turn strengthen the bond between you. Plus, treats are great training aids!

Begging

Many of our canine pals are very accomplished beggars. Fido is an absolute master at guilting us into sharing our food and treats. This is bad petiquette, and is definitely a contributing factor to skyrocketing doggy obesity rates. If you can’t resist those sad puppy dog eyes, give your furry little actor a carrot or a string bean instead of that piece of bacon.

Homemade Cookies

If you like cooking, you can make your furry pal’s snacks. Just stick to ingredients that you know are safe for Fido. Plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken is a good bet. Be sure to remove the skin, bones, and fat! You can also add bacon bits, cheese, egg, olive oil, wheat germ oil, liver powder, natural peanut butter, mashed bananas, plain yogurt, or sodium-free broth. Certain fruits and veggies, like peas, carrots, and spinach, are also safe. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Your pooch will likely be more than happy to sample experimental recipes as well.

Choosing Products

When getting store-bought treats for Fido, you probably don’t have to worry too much about whether your furry friend will like your selection. As you’ve probably noticed, Man’s Best Friend isn’t particularly fussy when it comes to food. Just try to choose healthier options. Read the label, and choose things that list mostly meat, fish, and/or poultry.

Recalls

It’s always a good idea to keep up with recalls. You can do that by following the AMVA page here , or the FDA pet food recall page here . Please reach out to us, your local Carolina Forest, SC vet clinic, anytime. We are here to help!
