Spring Hazards for Pets

April 1 2016

Spring has sprung, and the weather is warming up! This can be a really fun time of year for pet owners. It’s really nice to be able to enjoy longer walks and outdoor time without getting chilly. Spring does bring some specific hazards to our furry buddies for pet parents to be aware of, however. Read on as a local Myrtle Beach, SC vet discusses some spring hazards that can threaten our animal companions.

Rodent Control

Rodent traps, rat poison, and rodenticides are very toxic to both Fido and Fluffy! Use only non-toxic methods to rid your property of unwanted vermin.

Garden Products

Spring is a prime time for gardeners. All of those pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers can be very dangerous for your pet, however. Be sure to keep all lawn and garden chemicals stored in places your furkid can’t access, and don’t let your pet run around in a recently-treated yard. If your pooch likes to dig, create a border to keep him out of your garden: you don’t want your furry pal digging up recently-planted bulbs, as they could be toxic. Last but not least, choose only pet-friendly plants. Check the ASPCA site for suggestions.

Pollen

Just like people, our furry friends can suffer from a wide variety of allergies. Pollen, leaves, and plants are some of the most common allergens. Your four-legged buddy can pick up pollen just by running through the yard. If your pet has allergies, keep the furkid inside during peak pollen times, and wipe down those furry paws and belly with a damp washcloth every day.

Wildlife

As the air heats up, insect populations are on the rise. This makes your furry friend a prime target for fleas, ticks, heartworms, and other dangerous parasites. Be sure to keep up on Fido’s and Fluffy’s parasite control products! Many animals are born in the spring, which can make for some protective parents. Keep your furry pal out of wild areas.

Easter Trappings

Chocolate bunnies and eggs are traditional parts of many Easter celebrations, but they can make your beloved pet very sick! Keep all chocolate away from your furry pals! Hard candies, decorations, and plastic eggs and wrappers are also hazardous to our four-legged buddies. Does your pet need vaccinations, an exam, or spay/neuter surgery? We can help!
