Assembling Your Pet’s Emergency Kit

January 15 2016

Emergencies are frightening because you just never know when one might happen. The only thing to do is be prepared-a pet emergency kit will help you do just that. Below, learn what to include from your Myrtle Beach, SC veterinarian.

First-Aid Supplies

Most of your pet’s emergency kit will be comprised of first-aid essentials. Include gauze, bandages, adhesive tape, a styptic powder or pen to staunch bleeding, nail clippers, scissors, a disinfectant solution, a thermometer, and a few pairs of latex gloves to protect your hands. Your vet can advise you on other first-aid items to put in the kit-call the clinic today for more recommendations.

Medical Records

Essential but often-overlooked items to put in your pet emergency kit are medical records. These can be lifesavers-quite literally!-should you have to take your pet to an unfamiliar doctor’s office, shelter, or emergency facility. Include proof of vaccinations, proof of ownership, a recent photo of your pet, and recent medical records of procedures or checkups. Store records in a tightly sealed waterproof bag.

Pet Meds

Does your pet take mediations regularly for a condition? Does he or she require dietary supplements to stay healthy? Make sure you pack a supply in your pet’s emergency kit; you just never know when you may have to administer medications. Check the expiration dates on medications and supplements regularly, and replace them if they’re no longer good.

Food and Water

If you live in an area where natural disasters or other events may force you to leave home for an extended period of time, you’ll want to pack canned pet food (it won’t spoil nearly as fast as dry kibble) and a few water bottles in the emergency kit. Water is also helpful for flushing wounds. Remember to pack a can opener to open your pet’s wet food.

Accessories

You may choose to include accessories like a leash, muzzle, sweater, blankets, toys, snacks, and other items in your pet’s emergency kit. Again, these items are usually necessary if you won’t be home for a period of time. Here at your Myrtle Beach, SC veterinary clinic, we sincerely hope you never have to use your pet’s emergency kit. However, being prepared ahead of time is the best way to make sure your animal companion stays safe! Call the office today to find out what other items to include in your pet’s emergency kit.
